Abstract

The availability of newer small-caliber videoendoscopes makes unsedated endoscopy an attractive option for the screening of Barrett's esophagus, esophageal varices and gastric cancers. Unsedated endoscopy, via a transnasal or peroral route, is well tolerated, has a diagnostic accuracy similar to standard upper endoscopy and leads to substantial cost savings. Preconceived notions on the part of physicians as well as patients continue to be an obstacle to the wide spread acceptance of this procedure
