The neonate with congenital heart disease: What the cardiac surgeon needs to know from the neonatologist and the cardiologist

In this article, we have reviewed some of the specific points in the continuum of care of the neonate with CHD wherein communication between the neonatologist, cardiac surgeon, and cardiologist is of particular benefit to the patient, the patient's family, and, for that matter, the health care team. (It is hard to conceive of an aspect of medical care that is not enhanced by better communication within the health care team.) We have also highlighted some specific considerations relevant to particular congenital cardiac malformations. Lastly, we would like to emphasize that the involvement of the neonatologist and the cardiologist should not end when the patient enters the operating room but should continue after the operation, particularly as regards the nonsurgical aspects of the patient's care.
