Surgical Causes of Back Pain

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

There are many causes of back pain, most of which do not require operative intervention. Operative intervention for just back pain or even chronic back pain is usually not successful. However, in cases where there is an underlying cause of the back pain such as a disc herniation, infection, cancer, or fracture, surgical intervention can be warranted and successful at resolving the back pain. This chapter focuses on what causes the back pain and when surgical intervention could be considered.
