N1 - Funding Information: Summary of action items that the American Physiological Society (APS) leadership and members can take to help promote and advance Black scientists. DEI, diversity, equity, and inclusion; HBCUs, historically black colleges and universities; NIH, National Institutes of Health; NSF, National Science Foundation. Funding Information: (12). Although the fellowship is no longer exclusive to Black trainees, the Porter program has provided about $5,250,000 in over 300 research fellowships and support for over 180 doctoral students from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds. Justifiably, APS takes great pride in the Porter Fellowship program, which was initiated years before similar programs were offered by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF). There is evidence that the Porter Fellowship and other efforts such as APS diversity travel awards have improved diversity since the mid-20th century. However, the representation of Black physiologists in APS and academia overall is still bleak. While Black representation on committees (8.2%) and council (16.7%) have improved, as of November 2022: just 3.2% of all APS members identified as Black. These numbers demonstrate a clear need for increased recruitment, support, and retention of Black physiologists. As the leading physiology organization in America, APS is well positioned to lead in this endeavor.
