The Odette Cancer Centre (OCC), of the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, is home to one of the largest mono-institutional brachytherapy programs in North America. The volume of patients treated at OCC in 2015 was 300 high-dose rate (HDR) prostate cancer brachytherapy patients, 75 low-dose rate (LDR) prostate cancer patients, 35 cervical cancer patients, 100 endometrial cancer patients, 5 penile cancer patients, and 1 anal canal cancer patient. The American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) has identified the OCC program as a center of excellence for brachytherapy training; as such, the institution plays host to several ABS-sponsored fellows annually. The highlights of the OCC brachytherapy program are the incorporation of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), based intraoperative treatment planning for prostate HDR brachytherapy. Up until 2013, the gynecological brachytherapy program at the OCC was limited to two-dimensional (2D) brachytherapy with restricted access to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as was the case with the majority of centers in the Province of Ontario, Canada.
