Abstract

There are many changes that occur during menopause, with sleep disturbances being one of the most problematic of these, and are reported by a majority of menopausal women. Great variability in sleep is detected in women as they age, especially in the postmenopausal state. It has been described as a more sensitive, lighter sleep, with increased arousal occurrences and lengthier awakenings. The older population do experience a higher burden of overall medical problems, including sleep troubles like insomnia, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. There are multiple studies that show increase in sleep problems in post-menopausal women.
