Abstract

Balloon angioplasty is a well-established treatment option in the maintenance of dialysis accesses. Angioplasty is typically performed when there is a stenosis of 50% or greater on either fluoroscopic or sonographic studies. Successful treatment is represented by a residual stenosis of less than 30%. Several drug-coated balloons (DCBs), first used in arterial peripheral vascular disease, have recently been employed to improve the patency of dialysis accesses after angioplasty. The objective of including these balloons is to prolong the time between interventions.
