Abstract
There has been a fundamental altering of access to health care given the recent enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as amended by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, also known as health care reform. Associated with this change is much hope that increased access to insurance coverage combined with free preventive care, wellness exams, and additional funding for community health centers will make for a powerful combination that significantly improves health outcomes for underserved populations. This coming expansion of demand for health care services, however, will also significantly accelerate the diversification of the patient pool and increase demand for services, which will amplify the challenges of having a less than optimal culturally competent workforce.
