Abstract
A paradigm shift in perioperative care has occurred over the last years across multiple surgical specialties to reduced surgical morbidity and mortality, enhance postoperative recovery, and reduce costs. The first part of this chapter will review the socioeconomic trends in spine care, discuss areas of functional decline in the surgical spine patient, and present the fundamental elements of a spine prehabilitation program. This will be followed by the post-surgical rehabilitation considerations for surgical spine patients.
