Abstract

There is an increased prevalence of diabetes in the general population and specifically in women of childbearing potential. The inpatient healthcare team should be prepared to care for women with both pre-existing diabetes in pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus. The postpartum period presents a challenge in establishing and maintaining euglycemia. Insulin management and lifestyle modification should be individualized according to the needs of the woman. Diabetes self-management education, lactation support, and other appropriate referrals for additional services should be considered.
