Abstract

Insomnia is a common complaint in palliative care patients, regardless of diagnoses or stage of illness. Palliative care is designed to address serious symptomatic complaints and guide decision-making in patients with complex or advanced illness. Loss of restful sleep can adversely affect quality of life and can lead to worsening clinical outcomes, therefore, prompt evaluation for causes and early intervention is crucial. This case discussion involves sleep disturbance in a woman with advanced breast cancer who is receiving palliative care. Differential diagnoses and management for this symptom will be discussed.
