Peripheral Nerve Compression and Pain

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Simply stated, pain is the brain’s response to potentially harmful stimuli sensed by specialized receptors along the peripheral nervous system. Stretch, compression, and certainly severance of a peripheral nerve will cause pain and dysfunction. We will review the pathophysiology of neuropathic pain and treatment options including medications, physical and psychological therapy, and surgical interventions with particular regard to peripheral nerve compression and surgical decompression strategies.
