Abstract
Coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a key for the effective management of patients presenting with non-ST segment elevation acute coronary syndromes (NSTEACS), as reflected in both the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology. This chapter reviews risk stratification, patient selection for cardiac catheterization, the role of PCI for revascularizing these patients, and the recommended adjunctive pharmacologic therapy. Two risk scores that are commonly used currently for risk stratification of NSTEACS patients are the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) score and the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) score. Adjunctive pharmacologic therapy is critical for the success of PCI, but is also beneficial for patients treated with a conservative approach. Anticoagulation is recommended for all NSTEACS patients undergoing PCI to reduce the risk of intracoronary and catheter thrombus formation.
