Abstract

Obesity has a profound impact on the development of skin manifestations. Obesity causes abnormalities in skin barrier function, sebaceous glands and sebum production, sweat glands, lymphatics, collagen structure and function, wound healing, microcirculation and macrocirculation, and subcutaneous fat. Obesity is implicated in a wide spectrum of dermatologic diseases including acanthosis nigricans, acrochordons, hyperandrogenism, striae distensae, adiposis dolorosa and fat redistribution, lymphedema, plantar hyperkeratosis, bacterial and mycotic infections, hidradenitis suppurativa, and psoriasis. Recognizing that obesity can both exacerbate and increase the likelihood of many dermatological conditions will permit earlier diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.
