Abstract
In the past two decades considerable attention has been focused on means of altering antimicrobial therapy to improve the outcome following bacterial meningitis in infants and children. More recently physicians have been concerned with the escalating costs of hospitalization for treatment of meningitis and have sought ways to shorten therapy and the time meningitis patients stay in hospital. I shall discuss how treatment of meningitis could be altered to facilitate more rapid discharge from the hospital, less costly management, and home care of patients with this disease.
