He received his BA and PhD degrees in Chemistry from Texas Christian University, medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He completed a psychiatry residency, on the research track, at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas followed by a research fellowship. He serves on five journal editorial boards including Biological Psychiatry and Journal of Dual Diagnosis and is a member of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Clinical, Treatment and Health Services Research Review Subcommittee. In 2002, he was the corecipient of the Gerald Klerman Award for clinical research from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression. He is a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, Society for Biological Psychiatry, Research Society on Alcoholism, and the International Society for Bipolar Disorders. Dr Brown{\textquoteright}s research is supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute on Mental Health, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and Stanley Medical Research Institute, and focuses on comorbidities of mood disorders including medical illness and substance abuse.",
