Abstract

To define what constitutes “family support” for children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus, we developed a 60-item Diabetes-Specific Family Behavior Scale (DFBS), which we administered to subjects attending a diabetes summer camp. The scores were correlated with metabolic control as measured by glycosylated hemoglobin. The group of items categorized as “guidance and control” correlated with metabolic control for the younger age group. Certain “warmth and caring” items correlated with metabolic control for adolescents and children. One item that correlated positively with metabolic control for the younger age group related inversely to control in adolescents.
