Abstract

Contrary to the findings of some others, little evidence has been obtained during these investigations that oral contraceptives have a deleterious effect on folate metabolism; however, further studies are indicated. On the basis of the studies reported now, as well as previous ones, intensive public health measures focused on eradicating all suspicions of folate deficiency do not appear to be warranted. It is very doubtful whether such measures would reduce pregnancy wastage appreciably or increase hemoglobin levels significantly in the vast majority of women.
