Abstract

Severe injury induces dramatic hormonal responses that lead to dramatic clinical effects. The resultant hyperglycemia, lipolysis and fatty liver development, and muscle catabolism and wasting are not quick to resolve after injury, and their lasting effects delay recovery. Several agents have been found that can ameliorate some of the hormonal effects of severe injury. Active research is ongoing as to which of these agents should receive general use.
