Abstract
A light scattering study of the fluctuation modes in a TGB liquid crystal was performed. As such, the temperature dependence of an instability in the helical director structure observed in the vicinity of the N* to N*L transition can be interpreted in terms of incipient grain boundary formation and smectic layering. The apparent absence of a soft mode at the TGB-smectic-C* transition indicates that the previously identified commensurate TGBA phase may be a commensurate TGBC phase with an unusually small molecular tilt angle.
