Abstract

Minimally invasive liver biopsy is used in neonates and children to diagnose and track progression of a variety of liver diseases. Laboratory values and imaging obtained preoperatively for hyperbilirubinemia help to guide in forming a differential diagnosis. Special anesthetic considerations include lower insufflation pressures in neonates. Operative approach includes an umbilical port and working ports to obtain a sample and perform an intraoperative cholangiogram if indicated. Cautery, sharp biopsy with scissors, or using the core needle method can be used in conjunction with laparoscopy.
