Trauma systems have reduced morbidity and mortality rates, but uncompensated care, overcrowding, and liability exposure are significant issues facing inner-city hospitals that treat large numbers of trauma patients. Unresolved, these problems have led to the closure of many trauma centers, thereby jeopardizing community health care.
