Abstract
Blocks of cortical-cancellous autogenous bone and homografts (freeze dried), used as spacers or filling defect materials following facial bone advancement, lengthening, and preprosthetic procedures, provide an immunologically acceptable matrix for new bone formation. However, resorption and remodeling of grafted bone in other areas may permit relapse. Blocks of Hydroxylapatite (HA) were designed for interpositional and onlay application. Clinical response was highly satisfactory. TDH blocks are not recommended for use alone when grafting movable facial bone parts or where the blocks are likely to sustain sheer forces during function. TDH blocks are recommended in interpositional osteotomy defects with autogenous grafts to insure stability of the procedure/graft, or alone to eliminate harvesting autogenous bone where primary bone union without bone grafts is safely anticipated.
