Abstract

Management of the pregnant patient living with HIV has evolved over decades. Well-tolerated and highly effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens initiated in pregnancy are now similar to first-line regimens for the nonpregnant patient living with HIV. Sustained viral suppression is the norm following adherence to a complete ART regimen. By reducing stigma, supporting the psychosocial needs of every patient, and emphasizing engagement and retention in HIV care during and after pregnancy, obstetricians can help eliminate horizontal and vertical HIV transmission.
