Abstract
A histologic study was undertaken to qualitatively and quantitatively assess bone ingrowth in semi-synthetic hydroxylapatite and in corticocancellous bonegraft from the ilium. In nine adult dogs an atrophic mandible was simulated. Two months after healing of the surgical sites an interpositional augmentation of the mandible was accomplished with porous hydroxylapatite on one side and with autogeneous iliac bone of the same dimensions on the contralateral side. Bone healing was studied clinically and radiographically. The coralline hydroxyapatite was well tolerated by the tissues, and provided better dimensional stability to the augmented mandible than the autogenous bone.
