Abstract

Fungal and Acanthamoeba keratitis are vision-threatening infections that can have devastating consequences if misdiagnosed or untreated. The availability of more effective treatment has contributed to a more optimistic very of these difficult to treat diseases. The prevalence of these pathogens varies depending of climate and other risk factors. Prompt diagnosis is often based on clinical findings, but should be confirmed laboratory workup to ensure efficacy of medical treatment. Treatment typically consists of a prolonged course of topical therapy with antifungal or anti-amoebic medication, many of which must be compounded. Topical therapy can be augmented by systemic or intraocular therapy. When medical therapy is inadequate, surgical therapy may be required for disease management.
