Executive summaries on hypertension I. Initial evaluation and nondrug therapies

As defined in the sixth report of the U.S. Joint National Committee (JNC-VI), additional risk factors beyond accurately measured blood pressure should be considered in making the decision to institute drug therapy for hypertension. Lifestyle modifications should be strongly advocated for all patients, and may safely be used alone in those who are at relatively low overall risk, even if the blood pressure is as high as 160/100 mmHg.
