Abstract

A systematic workup usually will identify a correctable cause. Volume overload due to inadequate medical therapy heads the list; lifestyle changes and renovascular disease are also important. Control should be established gradually, in order to avoid overtreatment and its sequelae. Even when a cause cannot be identified, devising an optimal drug regimen will often at least improve blood pressure.
