Abstract

Implementation of health information technology does not occur in a vacuum or devoid of people. Implementation is substantially affected by the user and organizational culture. This chapter focuses on creating a comprehensive and effective strategy for implementation that promotes the adoption and effective use of a clinical information system. Specifically addressed are organizational culture and behavior assessments based on social-psychology theories that affect the entire implementation process and adoption. Key success factors in implementation include communication, champions’ role, understanding user requirements/needs and workflow, and incorporating user feedback.
