Abstract
Bioresorbable polymers such as poly-D.L-lactide and poly-lactide-glycolide copolymers have been used as coatings for metallic stents since 2000. They are drug eluting stents (DES). These coatings are impregnated with drugs to deliver anti- inflammatory agents to the arterial lesion site. They have shown to be proven superior to bare metal stents (BMS) by reducing restenosis in coronary stent applications. Many different stent platforms exist and new paradigm of stents, bioresorbable stents (BRS) are currently under clinical evaluation. These stents have different characteristics from stent geometric shape and thickness, design patterns, coating materials, resorption rate, radio- opacity and anti-inflammatory agents. In this chapter, emphasis is driven towards the current stent coating and processing methods of poly-lactide and degradation of poly- lactide for stent applications. This chapter further discusses coating technologies of PLGA and PDLA for drug eluting stents, material designs, degradation of poly-lactide stents, preclinical and initial clinical experimental studies with bioresorbable stents.
