Abstract
Varying degrees of depression are associated with school failure in adolescents of average intelligence and suicidal behavior. Depression scores have also been correlated with adverse health behaviors such as cigarette smoking and alcohol, marijuana and other drug use. In spite of increased awareness of the problems associated with depression in adolescents and the apparent frequency of the disorder in this age group, many adolescents with depression fail to be recognized and treated. Adolescents showing deterioration in functioning in school, home, or with free time need to be systematically assessed for the presence of affective disorders. This evaluation should include interview of the adolescent, parent and all significant others. The use of self-report parent and teacher reports can be utilized.
