Abstract
1. Rabbit blood or mesenteric lymph leucocytes cultured in vitro for 72 hours with PHA show blast forms and mitoses. 2. Spontaneous blastogenesis and mitosis of such cells takes place at the end of the fifth day. 3. Macrophages develop in 5-day blood cultures whether or not phytohemagglutinin is present. Macrophages do not arise from leucocyte cultures of monocyte-free blood or from lymph. This supports the view that macrophages arise from monocytes in the peripheral blood, and not from lymphocytes.
