Abstract

1. 1. Fatty acids covalently bound to membrane proteins were studied in the marine sponges Spheciospongia confoederata, Microciona prolifera and Tethya aurantia. 2. 2. Cell membrane isolates obtained by successive centrifugation and ultracentrifugation steps were subjected to exhaustive lipid extraction by organic solvents. 3. 3. After delipidation, fatty acids covalently bound to membrane proteins were obtained by hydrolysis. 4. 4. While total lipids from sponge extracts as well as from the organic extracts of the membrane delipidization procedure contained very long chain (C24-30) fatty acids as their major constituents, fatty acids covalently bound to proteins were predominantly of the conventional (C16-18) type.
