Abstract

Colonic epithelium expresses a rich variety of glycoconjugates, including cell surface membrane-bound glycoproteins and glycolipids, and several secreted glycoproteins. Heterogeneity among glycoconjugates may be expressed in the core structures, or in the attached oligosaccharide chains, giving rise to a wide range of molecular diversity. A number of observations suggest that many glycoconjugates may be important mediators of cellular behavior and intercellular communication.
