Abstract
The cervix is an important component of the female reproductive tract located at the base of the uterus. While there are structural differences between species, the cervix has a common function to aide in fertilization, provide protection to the upper reproductive tract and to undergo a well-orchestrated remodeling process during pregnancy and parturition to allow for safe passage of a term fetus. These processes are regulated in part by the steroid hormones progesterone, estrogen and relaxin.
