Abstract

Capsular contracture is the most common complication in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery resulting in a significant economic burden. While historically rates were as high as 50%, understanding the etiology for capsular contracture has contributed significantly to its significant reduction. With the development of antimicrobial breast pocket irrigations to address bacterial contamination, the incidence has dropped tremendously. Despite these significant strides, plastic surgeons are still faced with capsular contracture and its management. Surgical management of capsular contracture is the most effective means to address it. We present an overview of the etiology of capsular contracture and an algorithm to manage it.
