Abstract

This chapter explores the topic of rebound insomnia that typically arises following detox from benzodiazepines (BZDs) used for sleep. It discusses the improper use and the risks of using BZDs for the long-term treatment of insomnia, specifically the risk of developing addiction. Current clinical guidelines for the treatment of insomnia are then presented followed by a discussion of BZD rebound insomnia. Finally, the importance of treatment as well as the available pharmacological and behavioral interventions is examined.
