N2 - Because of the high morbidity and mortality in patients with cirrhosis who become infected (many of whom may be denied liver transplantation because of multiple organ failure) and the paucity of data in this field, we propose the studies outlined in table 4. Only through systematic study of epidemiology, bacteriology, resistance patterns, and procedure and medication utilisation specific to patients with cirrhosis will we discover how to routinely accomplish this in the most cost-effective way.
