Abstract

The authors have studied the dependence of the potential produced by adsorbed ANS ions on their concentration in solution, the ionic strength of the electrolyte, the size of the charge and the dipole potential jump on the b.l.m. surface. The measurements were made on flat b.l.m. of varied composition by the method of compensation of the intramembrane field. It is shown that on membranes of neutral lipids the dependence of the potential on ionic strength is absent, on charged membranes increase in ionic strength leads to a parallel shift of the curve Δφ{symbol} (log c) describing the dependence of the potential on the concentration of ANS in solution towards lower concentrations of ANS. The results are explained by the fact that the plane of adsorption of ANS is located within the membrane and adsorption is influenced by the discrete distribution of the adsorbed charge and the non-electrical interaction of the ions in the adsorption plane. An equation is presented relating the measured potential to the concentration of ANS in solution and ionic strength. From comparison of the theoretical and experimental curves the authors have found the binding constants and energy of the non-electrical interaction for membranes of different lipids.
