Abstract
Rapid deterioration of hepatic function, characterized by coagulopathy and mental status changes, defines acute liver failure. There are numerous causes of acute liver failure which vary by geographic region. Survival depends on rapid diagnosis, treatment of the underlying aetiology if available and aggressive intensive care. Cerebral oedema, intracranial hypertension, metabolic derangements, bleeding and infection are common complications. The advent of liver transplantation has improved outcomes but mortality remains high despite medical advances.
