Abstract
Endoscopic examination of the small bowel has been termed the "final frontier" of endoscopy. Standard endoscopic examinations evaluate only short segments of the proximal and distal small bowel. Wireless capsule Endoscopy (WCE) gathers the endoscopic gap between push enteroscopy and ileal intubation at colonoscopy and enables the visualization of the entire small bowel. It has revolutionized evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract. New devices such as the esophageal capsule and the colon capsule in addition to small bowel capsule provide additional tools to study gastrointestinal tract. WCE ease of use and safety profile makes it an invaluable tool in patients with obscure GI bleeding and suspected small bowel disease in adults and children. In this chapter we discuss the history and development of WCE, equipment, safety, preparation, indications, contraindications, special consideration in pediatric population and future of WCE.
