Abstract
Nocardia asteroides, a Gram-positive aerobic actinomycete, primarily causes systemic nocardiosis in immunocompromised patients. In a previous investigation it was discovered that the N. asteroioes produced a variety of hydrolytic enzymes including urease under in vitro conditions. Since urease has been implicated as a virulence factor in other organisms, the influence of certain nutritional factors on growth, intra-and extracellular urease production in N. asteroides was examined. The results were compared with those obtained for other Nocardia spp. Maximum growth and enzyme act vity were observed after 72 and 120 h of incubation, respectively. Among the three media used, synthetic medium supported maximum growth and enzyme production compared with Sabouraud dextrose broth or tryptic soy broth. The highest urease activity was observed in N. asteroides followed by N. brasiliensis and N. caviae.
