Abstract
To the Editor: The study by Amarenco et al. (Jan. 23 issue)1 provides useful information about the prevalence of plaques in the aortic arch in patients with stroke. However, the authors' hypothesis that ulcerated plaques were responsible for many of the strokes they studied is not proved by the data. Table 3 of their paper indicates that the prevalence of ulcerated plaques increases with age. Table 2 shows that the mean ages of patients with identified as compared with unidentified causes of cerebral infarction were similar, but no data or comparisons are provided with regard to the ages of patients…
