Abstract

Severe hypoxemia in 17 patients, 2 to 56 yr of age, was treated with prolonged extracorporeal oxygenation using a Bramson membrane oxygenator for periods ranging from 3 hr to 12 days. Acute respiratory failure resulted from viral pneumonia in 4 cases, aspiration and bacterial pneumonia in 4 post traumatic fat emboli and shock lung in 6, and respiratory burn in one. One had amniotic fluid emboli, and one had severe heart failure, with pulmonary edema after cardiac surgery. Two patients survived.
