Abstract

Transverse myelitis (TM) and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) are considered immune-mediated demyelinating events of the central nervous system (CNS). Seen in all age groups, these conditions are potentially devastating neurologic events but are treatable when recognized early. While TM is a condition restricted to the spinal cord, ADEM can affect the brain, spinal cord, and/or optic nerves. Clinicians should be able to recognize symptoms of TM and ADEM, diagnose the conditions, offer acute therapy, seek out any underlying causes, and ultimately manage the potential long-term symptoms of these disorders.
