Totally robotic Ivor Lewis esophagectomy

Abstract

This chapter details briefly the history and evolution of esophagectomy. The transition to minimally invasive methods, advantages, disadvantages, and the emergence of robot-assisted esophagectomies are detailed. The early reports of robot-assisted esophagectomy have incomplete documentation; however, the history of its evolution to totally robotic Ivor Lewis esophagectomy has been detailed. The indications, preoperative planning, anesthetic concerns, operative technique for performing this procedure safely (including a video link and intraoperative pictures), postoperative care, and complications are discussed. A comprehensive review of the published outcomes, costs incurred, and "resident training" for this procedure are provided.
