Abstract

Patients ask whether acyclovir is a cure for genital herpes, and physicians want to know how they should use the drug. The article in this week's issue by Corey and his associates offers some answers to these questions.1 No, topical acyclovir does not cure genital herpes; recurrences are just as frequent in patients treated with the drug as in those treated with placebo. However, in contrast to other agents used in the past to treat this increasingly common disease, acyclovir is a definite beginning in therapy.
