Abstract
Beta-blockers are competitive antagonists that block receptor sites for endogenous catecholamines. Beta-adrenoceptors are part of the sympathetic nervous system. This review will focus primarily on the β1-adrenoceptors which are located in the heart and kidney. The role of β-blockers in the management of acute cardiovascular emergencies such as heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, and tachyarrythmias will be discussed. In particular, therapeutic indications and implications will be described for acute use of these agents in the emergency department.
