Abstract
The quality of health care in the United States has been seriously debated for two decades. Most experts in the field feel that our system is much too expensive and not as safe as it should be. The reasons for these weaknesses are many and include factors that involve the systems of care delivery, the methods of reimbursement, societal factors including our perception of the importance of the health care system in maintaining health, and medico-legal influences. This chapter provides a framework to explain these influences on the US health care system and how they fit in the overall quality of our system.
