Abstract
For many centuries, the biological basis of the human mind has been an important focus of attention in science, with particular interest in the brain basis of language. Since the 19th century work of the neurologists and anatomists, and the 20th century advances in linguistics and psychology, a set of new technologies and methods is permitting scientists of the 21st century to integrate this past work to evolve a deeper understanding of the neurobiology of language. This chapter introduces the overall field of inquiry and sets the stage for in-depth discussions of the topic that unfold in the contributions of this book.
